Here it is! From Simon Kelly in the UK is the Hunchback kit. The last one we had was a revamped recast of the Tyco toy. This is a completely new scratch build that has been converted to a kit. It is currently available on eBay UK.

Zeus!

A few months ago, Scott sent me the lower legs and shoulders from his Zeus in 1/60 scale. Now, the Zeus is far from my favorite mech...its not even in my top ten...but as Coke was nice enough to send me some pieces, I decided to do my own version.

I used the paper model found at Mech3.org as my template. The torso I filled in and built up with Apoxy Sculpt. The legs and upper arms were layered to look armored like the Zeus-X. It is pretty much done except for some tweaks to the gun arm to include an ammo feed mechanism and the radiator fins coming off the shoulder.

As it is not my favorite design, I will entertain offers for it. Just drop me an e-mail.

Adrain Tan's Maruader

So, I am going through my stuff and find a folder with these pics. Blessed Blake only knows how I misplaced these, but they are of a build Adrain Tan did of a Maruader. Here is what he has to say about the build:

...while searching on the net for resources, I came across this pic and I just have to use it as a reference to build my kit.

We all know that the Macross Pod Glaug looks exactly like the Marauder. So using a Bandai Pod Glaug kit as a base, I tried to modify it so that it looks more Mechwarrior and less Macross...I also built a open up hatch so that I could install a cockpit.

Adrain, that is an AWSOME interpretation and does fit the Battlemech feel much better than the original. Please feel free to share more of your builds at any time. Thanks!

Okay...two years ago I started this bugger. I was making good progress on the torso, but was getting hung up on the legs. So, I sent it to the "Jedi Master" of mechs, Scott from the Messy Desk blog. He sent it back a week ago and I finished some scribing, cleaning and detail work. I sent Scott a mech about 30% done...he backed off some of what I did and ran with the the other 70-75%. He has my thanks...and I have the ANNIHILATOR!

There are 26 pieces in this kit and in this photo you can see it assembled. As it is here, there is only glue on the knee joints, everything else is friction fit.

It stands about 7 1/2 inches tall depending on the pose(which is easily modifiable) and a decal sheet is included with various House symbols and Merc units. Decals were printed on the Xerox Phaser Color Laser system.

IS Hunchback

Last year Chris Lynch sent me a great kit of the Hunchback IIC. I did the instructions for him and he let me keep the kit.

Deep down though, I never liked the IIc model. I am a classic kind of guy, so I decided to remodel this into an IS version. I started last year, but with grad school and a big move, model building got put on the back burner. Here is where I had left off....

In the past couple week, watching Scott's builds has gotten me fired up again. I am about done with the Hunchback. I have made significant changes to the torso, arms, forearm medium lasers, and added knee guards. That knee joint just seemed too vulnerable. Here is where it stands today.

So, for a combo Valentines and Anniversary present, my wife got me the Wave Tomahawk Destroid as well as the Wave Destroid Defender.

So, now that I am done with my Masters Degree I may have time to build some more kits. My inner debate is this: Do I build these true to Macross or do I pick out a Battletech personality dor each and do their custom ride...kinda like the Warhammer posted below?

Thoughts anyone?????

Hi everyone!

We are STILL HERE!

I know it has been a long time since I posted anything, but I have been busy with *(not in any order)....

1. Finishing my Masters Degree
2. Working an internship
3. Completing a paper that is being published...about Leadership
4. Writing another paper about personal development and leadership qualities.
5. Husband
6. Dad

Nate has sent me oodles of stuff lately and I intend to publish it this weekend. Scott has moved on to a Star Wars kit. Chris is doing his own line of mechs and I am hoping to get a preview copy so I can do a write up on it.

Soooooo....look for more this weekend.

Quick Update

Hi Everyone! Still here...but busy beyond belief.

First, there was the aforementioned funeral. The following week, my boy got sick. He started with a nasty cold...then ear infection, then pink eye. Poor guy was down for over a week.

Then the wife got sick.

Then I got sick...I even ended up in the hospital. Dehydration sucks.

Then, finals started...and I started an internship...and Christmas...and MOVING!

It never seems to stop....although the first of the year should see some return to regularity.

After that, my next main project is to start making some generic decals for 1/60 scale mechs. I purchased a Xerox Phaser laser printer and it does beautiful work. Feel free to post suggestions. I was thinking generic warning strips, numbers, and the like. As this is a laser, I am still stuck doing work that does not require white.

On another mech note, Chris...a builder and our caster....has started a new line of mechs. He was asked to cease with the 1/60 scale battletech stuff so he started designing his own. His first is posted on his site and can be seen here. It is a kick-butt design. I plan on getting one as soon as I can.

Hiroko "Jean" Lawhon, 78, of Proctorville, Ohio passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Cabell Huntington Hospital. She was born April 20, 1932 in Japan to the late Hikotaro and Fujiyo Komukai Ota. She is survived by her husband Robert Lawhon; two daughters Delores Spears of Nolensville, TN and Betty Ann Keeney of Huntington, WV; two sons Joseph L. Lawhon of Proctorville, Ohio and Phillip G. Lawhon of Bon Aqua, TN; two brothers and three sisters of Japan; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren and many "adopted" children and grandchildren. Funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, November 11, 2010 at Hall Funeral Home by Pastor Earnest Earl.

Well, I got an e-mail from Chris at Ravenstar. He has done most of the casting and created quite a few kits. From his blogsite...

i have been asked very nicely to stop selling battletech design models and as of this moment i have.

That is all the info I have. I don't know if it came from Catalyst Game Labs or from Armorcast or someone else. What this means is that there probably won't be any more mechs coming from us in the near future.

In the mean time, I intent to continue publishing builds that those in our little community send me as well as any scratchbuilds that we come up with.

Still no update or review on the Savannah Master and Wolverine. I know its been a month, but what can ya do?

So, in its place I have a new set of mech pics from Nate. Here is his description of the mech:

AS7-D Atlas

This is an old 1/60th scale Armorcast Atlas I picked in 2007 before they stopped producing them due to WizKids going under. The kit wasn’t modified in any way. I used German colors for the main paint scheme. For the masking, I used "Silly Putty". It worked great, going over the model and didn’t leave any residue or peal any paint. The only problems that I found with using "silly putty" was that I caused damming, paint would pool up in low spots and would making a ledge when you peel the putty away. Even with the damming, it still makes painting uneven surfaces easy to paint. Its markings were comprised of custom, Fighting Pirannha Graphics and modern aircraft. The shading was with graphite and airbrushing.

The kit is a command Battlemech of the 1st Kearny of the Northwind Highlanders.

So, I mentioned not being fond of the Hunchback IIc and was going to convert one into an IS version. Here are the updates:

Reworked the torso....

Fixed the knees so they will be more posable...

And on a whim, spent a few hours reworking the fingers...

Also, I have redone the cockpit to be flat and more squat like the IS version. The feet are being reworked also to give it a more compact look. Finally, there will be more done to the chest to make it like the IS version and I have made medium lasers for the forearms. Stay tuned....

Long Absence

Sorry about my absence folks. I have been taking a Graduate course over the summer...Experimental Immunology. It is a five week course and the work load has been overwhelming. In addition to being in class 5 hours a day and 2 hours of traveling, I try to study 2 or so hours a day...plus all the little projects that have gone along with the course. However, this is the last week (3 tests) and then I have a week or so off.

In that week off, I am planning on doing reviews of the new Thor and Wolverine kits from Ravenstar. He has said he is sending them out this week. I am waiting with great anticipation.

Another project I plan on tackling is revamping the Loki to more closely match the Thor...once I get a Thor as a reference.

Hi everyone. Just wanted to share some thoughts about large scale mech building. Is there still a lot of interest? It seems like interest is dropping off...as are orders....

I am hoping to get my hands on an extra torso of Ravenstar's Hunchback IIc so I can convert it to an original Hunchback. That would be quite cool. I am also going to start working on an Avatar mech using the legs from an Armorcast Vulture.

What are your thoughts? What would you like to see?

Here is a Summoner I built several years ago. It was a limited run...one of only a handful out there. It is too large for 1/60 but too small for 1/35. I would guess somewhere around 1:45. This is what we based the Battlemech Club Hellbringer on.

Nate's Legionnaire

I just finished my legionnaire from joyride. Its more of toy then a model but a little modification and some paint it came out looking pretty good. The thought of modifying the mech came after I read the mechwarrior book "call to arms." It is the second book of the Dark Age saga. Anyway, after reading the book and looking at battletech wiki on the legionnaire I got an idea what I was supposed to do but I had no example on what the modified mech was going to look like. The little foot note in the wiki said that the RAC-5 got moved from the torso to the right arm and with the freed up space from getting rid of the targeting computer, it allowed for 3 medium lasers. I had fun building this mech and weathering it was fun too. Its been awhile since I used a airbrush to weather so I used that for the bulk of the blacking. The hardest thing of the build was the decals. I used individual letters to make up the markings and militia identification. It was a slow and time consuming ordeal but it came out looking better then I hoped for.

New Year, New Construction Method

Well...these may not be models we could cast and sell, but they are 'Mechs...and they are built from scratch. I have to say, these LEGO mechs are cool as all get-out! Here is the info in Nick's own words:

I have built several battletech models of my own, but mine are constructed out of Lego. I find this is an easier medium to build with than what you do! Some of my past models can be found at brickcommander.com in one of the galleries page. I have currently built to date a Vulture, Thor, Dasher, Koshi and two points (ten) of Elemental infantry armor. I had built a Black Hawk, Fenris and Ryoken years ago, but they have been scrapped and are currently back on the drawing board...I have a half-completed Uller, Loki and Fenris rebuild all getting closer to completion. The Loki is close, but the building is slow going...

All of my models are approximately 1/32 scale, and my Thor stands just about 15.5 inches tall, the Vulture about 14.6 inches. All the models have arm posability, torso twist, opening weapons pods and cockpit compartments and are fully standing with no glue. Some have leg posability.

Status: Currently out of production
Build up:
This one received a lot of love in the build process:
• added the "aftermarket" large size LRM-20 pods
• scratch build the small laser on the left side of the torso
• plugged the MG holes in the lower torso that aren't used
• repositioning of the toes
• removing the sops in the 'knee' area to move the leg
Finishing:
The TWolf was my first attempt at the hairspray method. I basically started out with a primer from Alclad (light grey) and painted the entire model using Alclad II metalizers. Once these where dry I sealed it with gloss varnish and P+ (being Future in the USA). After that was allowed to cure for a few days I sprayed hairspray, sprayed the base coat of German Grey and added the 3 tone camo. Once this was allowed to dry I took some luke water and scratched the entire mech. This gives a very realistic looking weathering.

After that I weathered the entire mech with oil paints, added the custom-made Falcon Decals and sealed it with Satin sealer.

The windows where achieved with Tamiya Clear paint. I started out with Tamiya Aluminum, the a fine layer (brush painted) of Clear orange, after that, clear green, clear red, clear blue all brush painted (Between each layer wait sufficient time to allow to dry). In total it received 15 or 16 layers to achieve the high gloss finish I have now. I never sealed it with any varnish, so I think it gives a nice dimension

When I first looked over Geert's work, I was fascinated with his weathering results. He has shared how he gets this worn look on his mechs using...of all things...hairspray.

Build up:
The kit was build straight out of the box. Only changes made where:

• The dynamic pose, by removing the "stops" at the toes and drilling another peg hole in the knee.

• Updating the 3025-era medium arm lasers to 3050-era large lasers using a wooden dowel.

Finishing:
The entire model was primed with Tamiya light grey primer and pre-shaded with Valejo black. After that the different panels where sprayed in using Tamiya Flat Red (thinned to about 50 paint/50 thinner) in different passages.

Once this was done, the hard edges where accentuated with a fine pointed brush dapped in flat black, washed with diluted raw umber and dry brushed with metal color.

House Kurita decals where home made using decal paper and a laser printer with spare "3"-decals from some fighter kit.

Legs where dusted with the airbrush and launch tubes where weathered using a brush.

Okay, so the month of Geert takes another side track; however, I have to share this build. Nathan, one of our members, has been scratch building a Dark Age style mech for the better part of a year. He forwarded some pics to me and I just have to share them. This is an incredible build. I am really in awe of his work. Here is the mech in his own words....

I want to say {this mech is an} assualt class. I liked the madcat Mk2 and worked off of that but with some modifications. I used shadow cat type feet and the legs are a lot like the MW4 vulture. The cockpit is a lot like a bushwhacker I think. I used parts from gundam, and the leg and ankle joints are from RoboGear’s T-Rex. That was the funny thing, I was going to make a modified RoboGear T-Rex and it turned into that. I think it came out a little pit more than I expected

Here are the spec’s I was going for.

Modified Rotary Long Tom x2
Rotary AC5 x2
Thunderbolt launchers x2
Small pulse micro lasers x2
95 to 100 tons
Speed: Cruse 65 kph, Top 85 kph

I also put a anti-missile system on it as well. The markings are from the Dark Age saga: a paladin of the Republic. I’ve been working on names, Im thinking…BlackCat.

Puma Redux

Yet another build from Cokefiend. This time, he has taken the Puma kit...mastered by 'lil 'ol me...and has done a redesign on it. My original sculpt was along the lines of the original mini. The proplem with that is that the back shell would block the legs. This one has been modified to represent a newer version of the Puma...without the rear shell. Looking good!

Casting to Cease

Due to myriad issues, both personal and professional, our caster has had to withdraw his services. After he finishes casting the last batch of orders, he will no longer be able to mold or cast kits for us. So, while those remaining members will continue creating models, it may be a while before existing masters become available in kit form. Hopefully, when we get our hands on the original molds and we can do something ourselves.

So, to our master caster...good luck...and you are always welcome back here.

You know, the more I look at it, the less I like it. Compare to the mini...it is really darn close. For some reason, that just did not translate into a nice looking large scale mech. While I will finish it, I don't know that the Templar will be cast...it will probably just be shelved. There are so many other mechs in the works that look so much better...and will take less rubber & resin to cast. Sigh.....

Here are a few shots of my first COMPLETE test fit for the Templar. The arms are going to have to be dropped and tweeked a bit, but over all, we are almost there. The joints where the hips attach to the legs are not pinned. They are designed to be more of a "ball and socket" set up. This will enable the builder to position the legs in more dynamic ways. Also, the heels and toes are separate pieces to aid with reposing the mech.

Whew...been busy. My wife had spinal surgery this week and I have been nurse-maiding her through it as well as chasing the 4 year old around. I have not been into model making much.

However, I have updated the main web site with a downloads page. I have included the instructions we have completed to date. I am still awaiting info for the Uller kit from the maker to get those instructions done. There is also several links to interesting pics...including the scale charts shown here. These pics are all the large formats so they will download and print well.

Finally, many of you have asked about becoming members. If you would like to join the club, please e-mail me and we can discuss what I need from you and you will be listed on the main site.

Here is the latest kit I am working. This is the 85 ton Templar from TRO 3067. It is described as a mech that moves like a heavy mech but fights like an assault mech. I have to work on the weapon's pods, but all in all it is really close to being done. I have blended the features I like on the mini with Mechwarrior version. It will stand about 8 or so inches tall when done. Thoughts?

Just a reminder, we are always looking for people to join the Battlemech Club. You can join as a builder, kit creator, Club contributor, or just a fan. Also, it takes a lot of money to create and cast these kits. I can see why Armorcast had a hard time. LOL! If you are interested in seeing more kits, we welcome donation. All donators qualify for first shot at new mechs off the assembly line...at a discount. Contact me to donate. What little extra we make off the kits is going right back into the club. Currently, we have not even broken even on the costs of rubber for the molds on the Puma. I know in many parts of the world, the economy just stinks, but I remind you that we are doing all of this out of our own pockets. Any help would be welcome. If finacial support is not possible, we gladly accept "scraps." If you have extra stuff around, be it from old navy kits, railroad kits, or especially armor and military kits we would love to give it a home. Don't throw away that extra piece or that broken kit...send it to us! We would love to help keep that stuff out of a landfill and on our mechs! Contact me if interested.

I have not posted in a while, so I thought I would just drop a line here to let everyone know what is going on. Recently, I was hit with something my MIS guy called the AC360 virus. Basically, crashed my PC. It has taken a couple of weeks, but we got it running again. We had reinstalled the OS that came with the system, but every time we tried to validate the software, it came back as a bogus copy. So, either HP sold me hot software, or something went wrong somewhere. Either way, I am up again. Additionally, I have been sick, my wife has been sick, my boy was sick and now has pink eye. YUM! Model building has been on the back burner. However, I have had a brainstorm for the Templar...and can't wait to play with it a bit this week. I have completed one leg and am going to cast it in resin to ensure that both legs match. My big problem is that the torso looks too small for the legs...but the mini is like that as well. Hopefully, I will have some pics up soon.

Well, another Wonderfest has come and gone and I missed it again. Pretty sad, actually. I live only a few hours away...but this year I had a sinus infection and no one wants a sick, miserable person around. I have cruised the various websites with pics and saw no Battletech kits displayed...and definitely no word about anyone producing anything new. It would seem Catalyst Game Labs has seen there is just not a big market for large scale Battletech. My friends, we are the few it would seem...
